The Suicide Squad as a team is really just a collection of misfits. There's no way around it. They are villains who have been sentenced to prison at Belle Reve. If their specialties in what got them to prison are needed, the government chooses them for special assignments for a reduction in sentence. Of course, the government gives them a reason to join. They have a way of terminating their lives if they go AWOL while on the mission.

There have been several volumes of the Suicide Squad since 1987. The most popular iteration was not the one shown here, but the latest one which incluced Harley Quinn.
